The webiste name was chosen to represent Biological Agriculture and the related engineering and science research.
Biological Agriculture (Organic Farming)
This practice is potentially ecologically sustainable because it prevents over exploiting the natural resources it depends on. It maintains high soil fertility through high biological activity in the soil. It also sustains the organic matter cycle, upon which soil biological activity depends, through recycling of organic waste. Organic waste can be recylced both into bioenergy and organic soil amendments. Biological Agriculture also excludes the use of pesticides and herbicides and their non-target effects, and also reduces environmental side effects such as nutrient leaching into underground water. Sustainable agriculture can complement sustainable housing, recycling and others to create a sustainable (and comfortable) life style. In the advent of an oil crisis Organic Farming can be a viable alternative to the conventional agriculture relying on the fuel-produced synthetic nutrients. Back to BioAgEngineering.
An online working group
It allows researchers and product developers to know of each others work before it is released in the public domain, by which time it's 'old news'. Knowing of each others work WHILE it is happening can prevent redundancy, and possibly lead to collaboration. This practice is potenitally ecologically sustainable, if practiced accurately. Nutrient leaching and underground water pollution could occur if organic soil amendments are used inappropriately. Biological Agriculture is also currently under pressure to meet an increasing market demand without compromising its ecological sustainability. In order to make the Organic Produce label more accessible some legislation may lower the standards defining Organic Farming, and therefore compromise its ecological sustainability. Engineering is a discipline where mathematics is used to model real life phenomena, such as in dynamics of materials and thermodynamics. This discipline also includes computer programming and robotics. Life sciences include biology, plant and soil sciences, entomology and others.
